Join us on Thursday, May 17th from 7-9 PM for a presentation of Amanda Coimbra’s new photobook "The Memory of a Vacation Album" at Spoonbill Studio [99 Montrose Avenue].
A vacation photo album is a familial object that holds our memories from a special moment in time. We ask these images to keep our memories safe to revisit later in hopes of reminiscing.
When the artist’s father’s apartment was flooded after a heavy tropical storm, the water that poured in came into direct contact with the images presented in "The Memory of a Vacation Album." The water altered the crisp photographs, their surfaces became stained, the images blurred. The precise photographic record tarnished and clouded like our fragile recollections, a mix of clarity and abstraction. "The Memory of a Vacation Album" is a photo book that recompiles these images, questioning the relationship between photography and memory.
Amanda Coimbra will be in conversation with New York City visual artist Mary Rynasko. Delicious sweets provided by Luckybird Bakery and beer lovingly provided by Brooklyn Brewery. Book signing to follow presentation.
