About this Workshop:
This writing workshop will be an attempt to write into a prose of abundance, where awareness touches the fantastical as a means for greater clarity. Participants will practice writing that craves shifting genres as a mode of responding to the critical present. During this brief workshop, participants will read and discuss excerpts from poet Alice Notley’s Close to me & Closer...(The Language of Heaven) and novelist Wilson Harris’s Jonestown—texts where the medium of the real is revealed through excess, through impossible imaginings. Through writing exercises that play on a “prosiac” reality that morphs beyond expectations, participants will write with the fantastical and strange as a means of attuning to the ongoing catastrophes of the present. The intent of this workshop is to strengthen participants’ improvisation and intuition in relation to their writing, to create imaginative works that are not escapist, rather closer and closer to now.
